Bulimia: An Eating Disorder
Bulimia is a type of eating disorder. Eating disorders are serious mental health problems that can be fatal. You may be obsessed with food and weight if you have an eating disorder. This obsession can be harmful to your physical and emotional health.
Bulimia is characterized by an eating pattern that includes:

Consuming a disproportionately large amount of food in a short period of time (binge eating).

Eliminating the food (purging) which may entail throwing up (vomiting) or taking laxatives. Laxatives are medications that aid in the passage of food through the body.
Signs and Symptoms of Bulimia

Frequent bathroom visits, especially after meals

Excessive physical activity

Obsession with body image

Anxiety about gaining weight

Depression, anxiety or substance abuse

Feeling out of control

Feeling guilty or ashamed about your eating

Causes of Bulimia
The precise cause of bulimia is unknown. However, researchers believe it is a combination of genetics and learned behaviors. If you have a relative who has or has had an eating disorder, you are more likely to develop one yourself.
Complications of Bulimia
Bulimia can deprive your body of the nutrients it requires. Bulimia can lead to a variety of complications, including throat, stomach ulcers, tooth decay, and cavities.
Bulimia Treatment
Your healthcare provider may use a variety of techniques to treat bulimia. They may refer you to a group of specialists, which may include dietitians and mental health professionals.
Treatment options may include:

Cognitive-behavioral therapy: A type of individual counseling. It focuses on changing your thinking (cognitive) and behavior (behavioral).
